“I left school to join the Tourist Guide Training Program established for the Coronation of His Majesty the 4th Druk Gyalpo. Shortly after, tourism was introduced to our small country. It was within this unique system that I first found a space for myself. I became a trekking and mountaineering guide in the early 80’s. During this time, I completed the Snow-Man Trek more than 10 times. Sometimes, we had to complete this near-impossible trek while carrying sick tourists on our backs. When the tourism sector was privatized, my partners and I established our travel company. For 20 years, I sat at my desk for 8-12 hours a day. Combined with poor diet, excessive smoking, and stress, this resulted in me becoming obese. In my 50s, I weighed 95 kg and had difficulties walking. It was then that I realized the importance of health. Then my fitness journey started.
I left my job. At first, I started with a daily walk. Later, I got interested in cycling. I would cycle every year with tourists across Paro-Bumthang-Trashigang-SamdrupJongkhar. 6 years after leaving my job, I completed the Tour of the Dragon– a dream since I began cycling. I travelled to Europe and cycled from Geneva to Nice. In peak winter, I travelled to Nepal and cycled across the Annapurna mountains. Cycling and running have now become an integral part of my life. My biggest sources of inspiration throughout this journey have been the Great Fourth King and His Majesty the Druk Gyalpo. I have been immensely blessed, having had the fortune to join HM on a few of his cycling adventures. I draw great strength from those moments and look to it for motivation.
To me, our King is an embodiment of the Buddha, and I intend to follow the footsteps of my Dharma King. His Majesty’s dedication to his country and people inspired me to join the Dessung Training Program at the age of 66. I felt like a young schoolboy again– sleeping on the top bunk, showering in community bathrooms, and competing in sporting activities. However, unlike in my school days, I won the 5km run! I feel proud and look forward to contributing my service to my King and my Country in my orange uniform. I’m currently serving at Phuentsholing.”
