“Every time I put on the orange uniform, I feel the responsibilities for my country on me. Before the pandemic, I was working for the Bhutan Tourism corporation, the exact sector that was the most affected by COVID-19. I admit the situation I was put in during the lockdowns wasn’t the greatest – I am currently without a stable job. The only things that kept me going were the gracious Kidu from His Majesty.

Rather than staying idle at home, I thought that I could help the country by joining the Dessup.
Initially, many people thought that I wouldn’t be able to handle the Dessup training, even my parents doubted my abilities but I was determined to help the country in any little way possible. I processed my application all by myself and after a few failed attempts, I finally got to be a part of the 41st batch. Although I struggled during the training and had thoughts of giving up and heading back home to my son, His Majesty’s humble efforts towards the country in these trying times kept me going. I felt like it was my responsibility to help out as much as I could and was glad to do so.

After the 2nd lockdown, I was assigned to Lungtenzampa school for Dessup duty which was perfect as my son studies in that school. He was happy that I was working close to him as it made things more convenient for the two of us. I also get to keep a close eye on him. I’ve been there for about 10 months now.

Once the tourism industry kicks off again, I will definitely rejoin my old job but I will still try my best to volunteer when needed. I hope that all eligible people join the Dessup and do their best to serve the Tsa-Wa-Sum.”
